The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at Emerson University is a cornerstone of scientific learning, applied research, and innovation. VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of a Biological and Environmental Science department typically centers around advancing scientific knowledge, educating future professionals, and promoting environmental stewardship. The vision often involves becoming a leader in research and education, contributing to a sustainable future, and fostering public understanding of science. The department often focuses on research in various biological and environmental sciences, including zoology, Botany, Microbiology, and environmental sciences impact assessment. The department may work to protect and manage wildlife and natural resources. It strives to promote understanding of the natural world and the importance of environmental conservation.

OBJECTIVES AND GOALS 

The primary objectives of a Biological & Environmental Sciences department are to cultivate a deep understanding of life’s processes, foster critical thinking and scientific inquiry, and prepare students for various careers in the field. Additionally, they aim to contribute to societal well-being and sustainable development through research and interdisciplinary collaboration.
This involves teaching basic principles, concepts, and skills related to various biological disciplines like molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecosystem levels.
Equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue careers in academia, industry, healthcare, environmental management, and other biology-related fields.
Contributing to the advancement of biological science through research, innovation, and the development of new technologies.
Using biological knowledge and research to address pressing issues related to health, biodiversity, sustainability, and food security.

Freshwater Biology and Fisheries

To meet growing industry demands and promote sustainable aquatic resource use, the department has launched a specialized program in Freshwater Biology and Fisheries. This new initiative focuses on the applied study of aquatic ecosystems, fishery science, aquaculture, and water management. It aims to produce graduates equipped for roles in government, private industry, and environmental consultancy.
