The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at Emerson University is a cornerstone of scientific learning, applied research, and innovation. The department offers four major academic programs—Botany, Environmental Sciences, Microbiology, and Zoology—each addressing critical areas of biological and environmental science while fostering a deep understanding of life, ecosystems, and sustainability.

OBJECTIVES AND GOALS
The primary objectives of a Biological & Environmental Sciences department are to cultivate a deep understanding of life’s processes, foster critical thinking and scientific inquiry, and prepare students for various careers in the field. Additionally, they aim to contribute to societal well-being and sustainable development through research and interdisciplinary collaboration.
This involves teaching basic principles, concepts, and skills related to various biological disciplines like molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecosystem levels.

Freshwater Biology and Fisheries
To meet growing industry demands and promote sustainable aquatic resource use, the department has launched a specialized program in Freshwater Biology and Fisheries. This new initiative focuses on the applied study of aquatic ecosystems, fishery science, aquaculture, and water management. It aims to produce graduates equipped for roles in government, private industry, and environmental consultancy.
