MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ZOOLOGY – MS (ZOO)

DURATION: 02 YEARS (04 SEMESTERS) | CREDIT HOURS: 30

OVERVIEW

Zoology delves into the biology, anatomy, behavior, and conservation of animals. Students engage in research-based learning and fieldwork, with access to the department’s extensive Zoology Museum, which supports studies in biodiversity, taxonomy, and comparative anatomy. The program also offers practical training in sericulture (silk farming), providing students with valuable skills that blend biological science with rural development and income-generating practices.

VISION

The vision of a zoology department typically centers around advancing knowledge of animals, their biology, and their interactions with the environment, while also fostering a sense of responsibility towards animal welfare and conservation. This often includes a commitment to quality education, research, and the development of students. The department aims to be a recognized center of excellence in teaching and research related to zoology, including anatomy, physiology, ecology, genetics, and biotechnology. The department prioritizes research to expand our understanding of animal life, evolution, and their environments. The department focuses on various aspects, including animal behavior, conservation, biotechnology, and disease.

MISSION

The mission of a zoology department generally focuses on education, research, and service in the field of animal studies. This includes equipping students with knowledge and skills in zoological science, conducting research to expand understanding of animal biology and ecology, and potentially promoting environmental awareness and conservation. Training students in zoological science, providing them with practical skills and ethical guidelines, and preparing them for careers in research, academia, or other fields requiring zoological expertise.
Generating new knowledge through research in various areas of zoology, including animal behavior, ecology, evolution, and conservation. Contributing to society by promoting awareness of animal diversity, conservation efforts, and the importance of understanding animal interactions within ecosystems. The department may also prioritize specific areas like molecular biology, physiology, or genetics, and may offer specialized programs in areas like fisheries or entomology.

ADMISSION ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • The candidates having 16 years of education (BS/ MA/ M.Sc or equivalent) in Zoology with 2.50/4.00 CGPA in case of semester system of examination or minimum 2nd division in case of annual system of examination are eligible to apply for admission to MS/M.Phil.
  • The age of candidate should not be more than 40 years for morning programs, 50 years for evening/self-support programs and 60 years for weekend programs to secure admission to MS/M.Phil. program.
  • The candidates seeking admission to MS/M.Phil. program shall have to qualify the entry test as prescribed by the concerned department/institute/center/college by securing 60% or more than 60% marks there in prior to admission. The passing marks for GAT (General) are 50% or more.

TEACHING SYSTEM

Botany department typically employs a variety of teaching methods to impart knowledge of plant sciences, including lectures, laboratory sessions, field trips, and online resources. The curriculum often covers foundational concepts like plant anatomy, genetics, and physiology, as well as more specialized areas like ecology, ethnobotany, and cell biology. Department also emphasize hands-on learning and experiential approaches to enhance student engagement.
